The basics of solar power

Sunlight is made of photons. A solar panel is a slab of silicon that knocks electrons loose when photons hit it. Those loose electrons are electricity. That's it — the whole trick.

The daily solar cycle

Morning

Panels start producing at sunrise, ramp up over a few hours. Your home uses what it needs; the rest flows to the grid.

Midday

Peak production. Often more than your home uses. Excess kWh get credited on your NV Energy account.

Afternoon

Production tapers as the sun angles west. Some homes with batteries start using stored power.

Night

Panels sleep. You draw from the grid — but you've banked credits all day, so the net bill is way lower.

How net metering works

NV Energy tracks the kWh you send them and the kWh you pull back. At the end of the billing cycle, they only bill you for the net. In Vegas sun, most well-designed systems zero out most of the year.
